Luellen Laurenti Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded annually each spring at the WGSS Student Research Symposium and provides support for an outstanding undergraduate Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies minor.

The Luellen Laurenti Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by what was then called Women's Studies Program of Illinois State University, with the assistance of Joseph L. Laurenti, in memory of Luellen Laurenti. Luellen, a long-time stalwart in the women's movement in Illinois and lobbyist for women's rights, passed away in June 2000. This scholarship will help preserve Luellen Laurenti's memory and legacy through the successes of the Illinois State University Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies students who receive the scholarship.

Luellen Laurenti taught in the Department of Foreign Languages and the Women's Studies Program at Illinois State University. She moved to central Illinois in 1963 to teach Spanish and to direct the foreign languages laboratory at Illinois State. For a number of years, she taught the introductory women's studies course, "Women Today." In the years after she left teaching, she continued to work with Women's Studies on a variety of co-curricular programs.

Requirements

To be eligible to apply, students must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in good standing at Illinois State University;
  • Have declared or are in the process of declaring a minor in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies;
  • Have completed or are enrolled in at least one course in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program;
  • Be in their sophomore or junior year;
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher based on a 4.0 system at the time of the application.

Application Procedure

  • Fill out the Luellen Laurenti Scholarship Application.
  • You will be asked in the application to provide a statement addressing your interest in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, career goals, and volunteer activities / community service.
  • Application must be received by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025. If you have questions or problems with the application process, or need to receive the application in a different format, please contact us at wgstudies@ilstu.edu.
  • Finalists will be required to submit a letter of recommendation and will need to name a faculty member who will be able to do so.
